It’s recommended that you service the window mechanisms yearly. However, avoid lubricants such as WD-40. Instead, use silicone-based lubricants to keep moving parts, locks, and hinges operating without attracting dust and dirt.

How Long Do uPVC Windows Last?

uPVC windows typically last 20 to 25 years, depending on the upkeep. Most manufacturers offer a 10-year guarantee for peace of mind, but in reality, they should last much longer.

Are uPVC Windows Suitable For Conservation Areas?

Conservation areas preserve the character and visual appeal of the area in which the houses stand. While this will protect the area’s beauty and historical character, homeowners must adhere to stringent rules when installing new windows. There are 33 conservation areas in Bristol, including parts of Cotham, Redland, Clifton, Bower Ashton, Stapleton, and Canon’s Marsh. You can check whether you live in a conservation area by checking the Bristol City Council Know Your Place website.

Installing uPVC windows in a Bristol conservation area will require planning permission from Bristol City Council, as Article 4 Directions remove ‘permitted development’ rights, meaning you cannot replace windows without permission. Our team will be happy to give further advice on installing uPVC windows in a conservation area and choosing the most suitable style for your home.

Do I Need Planning Permission To Replace My Windows?

In most cases, replacing windows in a standard house will fall under Permitted Development. This means that you do not require formal planning permission. This generally applies if the replacement windows are similar in appearance to the windows being replaced.

However, there are several key exceptions you must consider where you will likely need to apply for planning permission:

If your property is in a designated area, such as a Conservation Area, your Permitted Development rights may be restricted due to Article 4 Directions. You must check with your local council, especially if you are changing the material or opening style.
You will almost always require Listed Building Consent for any window changes in a listed building, even if you are replacing the windows like-for-like.
Flats and maisonettes do not have Permitted Development rights either, and you will need planning permission to change the appearance or material of the windows.
If you want to add new windows, you will need planning permission, particularly if the new window overlooks a neighbouring property. You may be required to add obscured glass.

Do I Need Trickle Vents?

Approved Document F requires most replacement windows to be fitted with trickle vents. A trickle vent allows fresh air to circulate in a room and removes polluted air. The main aim of these vents is to improve air quality and provide ventilation even when your windows are closed. As homes have become better insulated and windows have improved, they are no longer as naturally ventilated. Therefore, condensation and mould can be produced from the accumulation of pollutants inside the home. Trickle vents help avoid problems associated with poor ventilation. This applies only to window and door installations carried out post 15th June 2022.

Even if your old windows did not have trickle vents, your replacements must have them to meet the new minimum ventilation standards.

What Do Window Energy Ratings Mean?

The energy efficiency of a window is rated on a scale from A to G, similar to the labelling system used on appliances such as fridges and washing machines. An ‘A’ rating indicates a good level of energy efficiency, whereas G is the lowest rating. Under Approved Document L, replacement windows in existing dwellings must achieve a minimum U-Value of 1.4 W/m2K, therefore a Window Energy Rating of Band B or higher.

What Is A FENSA Certificate For Windows?

FENSA, or the Fenestration Self-Assessment Scheme, ensures that windows are installed in line with the latest building regulations. A government-authorised scheme, FENSA, ensures that window installations meet energy efficiency standards and are registered with the local council. Often, you will be required to present a FENSA certificate should you choose to sell your property, as this proves that the work has been completed as per UK Building Regulations.
