Flush casement windows are increasing in popularity for home improvement projects but what exactly does the term flush casement window mean? The term ‘flush’ refers to the fact that their window sashes sit flush with the window frame, whereas the sashes on standard casement windows protrude out slightly. In general terms, this is the only difference between a flush casement and a normal casement window. You might also see them referred to as flush sash windows. The sash is the name given to the frame that contains the glass, and there will usually be a top and a bottom sash in a typical window.

Origins of flush sash windows
Flush sashes were a characteristic of traditional timber windows so they emulate this distinctive feature. However, flush casements imitate more than just the sashes and they actually copy historical timber window designs down to the finest detail. But, instead of being built from timber, they are usually made from uPVC, as is the case here at Seal-Lite. The other timber window features that they emulate are:
- Smooth joints – traditional timber windows were known for having smooth corner joints along with seamless welds in the outer frames and deep bottom rails. However, because uPVC windows are manufactured differently from timber ones, they usually have mitered welds. But, flush casements are different; they are manufactured with mechanical joints and outer frames, giving them a seamless appearance just like a timber window.
- Deep bottom rails – timber windows were also known for having deep bottom rails, therefore, this feature has also been copied for added authenticity.
- Traditional window furniture – Monkey tail and teardrop window handles are available along with dummy peg stays, to complete the classic window appearance.
