When you are upgrading your home, whether you are installing new windows, adding additional insulation or building an extension, you will constantly come across the term ‘U-Value’.

If you aren’t sure what it means, you aren’t alone. It’s quite easy to get lost in all of the jargon that goes into efficiency ratings, but understanding U-values is very important when choosing a new product or when deciding on the best way to increase the efficiency of your home.

What is a U-Value?

In basic terms, a U-value measures how effective a material is as an insulator. It then tells you how much heat can pass through a specific element of a building, such as a wall or pane of glass.

  • Lower is better. A high U-value means that heat will transfer easily through it (poor insulation).

  • A low U-value means that heat struggles to pass through, providing better insulation, up to excellent for the lowest-value materials and products.

The Maths Made Simple

U-value is technically referred to as thermal transmittance. It is measured in watts per square metre-kelvin W/(m2K)

If we take a window with, say, a U-value of 1.4, this means that for every one degree of temperature difference from the inside and outside of the room, 1.4 watts of heat energy will escape through every square metre of the window.

Don’t Get Confused Between R-Values and U-Values

If you have researched insulation, then you have probably also seen R-values. They are effectively opposites. You can think of it as U for Under (you want the value down) and R for Resistance (you want this number up).

Why Do Lower U-Values Matter on Windows?

Low U-values are very important if you are looking for the most efficient windows possible. There are three major areas where lower U-values help and also make a faster return on your investment from saving on energy bills:

  • Lowering Your Energy Bills – Lower U-values mean that your heating doesn’t have to work as hard during the winter. You will also have less heat escaping, which makes your heating more efficient and heats the home faster.

  • Comfort – Higher U-values create cold spots and drafts. Low U-values keep the interior glazing warm, eliminating that chilly draft that you can get from sitting next to a window.

  • Building Regulations – These have become stricter in focusing on low U-value products for new installations, with maximum U-values being mandated. If you exceed the mandated U-value with new materials, you may not pass inspection.

What Are “Good” Benchmark U-Values?

U-values vary depending on the material and age of your property. This means that properties will differ, with other challenges such as listed status and conservation area restrictions also needing to be taken into account. With that being said, here are typical U-value benchmarks that you should expect for windows and doors:

 

  • Single Glazing (Old):   4.8 to 5.8 W/(m²K) (Inefficient for heat retention)

  • Double Glazing (Standard):   1.2 to 3.7 W/(m²K) (Ranges from older uncoated units (≈3.7) to modern low-e glass (≈1.2). Current Building Regs require 1.6 or below.)

  • Triple Glazing (High Efficiency) Centre-pane (Ug): ≈ 0.6 to 0.8 W/(m²K)

  • Triple Glazing (High Efficiency) – Whole-window (Uw): ≈ 0.8 to 1.0 W/(m²K) (the figure required for Building Regulations compliance)
