How to Adjust Windows to Stop Draughts

Draught from the hinge side

The window has “dropped,” or the hinge is loose. Dropping is when the window has become misaligned, which allows a gap to cause draughts, as if the window is permanently open. 

Adjust the hinge screws or use the side-adjustment screw to realign the sash. This should fix the alignment of the window, and then you have effectively sealed any gaps that are causing draughts.

Draught from the handle side

The locking cams are too loose, preventing a tight seal. This can happen over time and will need to be rectified to keep the draught out.

Rotate the compression cams (the mushroom-shaped bits) to increase pressure. This will tighten the handle, which can also help with handle issues, as you don’t want the handle to be too loose on the window for security and operational reasons.

Draught from the glazing itself

The glazing itself, if you have a fully secure door, is a more serious issue. If you can see condensation in the window, then this is another indicator that the seals are damaged.

Damaged seals can sometimes be repaired, but this issue usually requires the replacement of the entire glazing or window itself, depending on the issue. The frame is usually fine if it’s in good condition. The rubber gaskets can be easily replaced, but the actual window seals require an entire refitting of the glazing.

The window won’t close tightly

Dirt in the tracks or the “stay” is bent. Dirt will naturally occur over time, especially if you are in a dusty area or near woodland. You will need to regularly maintain your locking mechanism from debris, especially if your windows get dirty often.

Clean the tracks and lubricate the friction stays with light oil (WD40 Specialist or 3-in-1). Spray the mechanism with compressed air before cleaning to clear any physical debris. You can also use a silicon-based lubricant if you want to make sure that the locking mechanisms stay lubricated and clear.

Visible gap at the top/bottom

The sash is out of square (misaligned). This visible gap will let air in, making the property very cold in the winter as if the window is always slightly open. This can happen over time or can be caused by warping and the house settling, which can cause fenestration to move.

Adjust the corner hinges to move the sash up, down, or sideways. This will then fix the gaps in the top or bottom, which will prevent the draught from occurring in the window. If this doesn’t fix the issue, then you will need to arrange for professional repair or replacement with our team.

Whistling sound

Perished or flattened rubber gaskets. This can also be due to improper installation that has now failed, as well as worn-out silicon sealant.

Replace the gasket seal (it usually pulls out and pushes back in). If the gasket seal isn’t causing the issue, then the window may need to be professionally repaired. We suggest that you speak with our experts as if the seals are compromised, as this may result in needing a new window fitted.
