Do replacement windows need trickle vents? In most cases, yes. Since June 15th 2022, Building Regulations Part F requires that replacing your windows must not make your home’s ventilation worse than it was before. Because new modern windows are far more airtight than the replacement window, that almost always means that you will need to fit trickle vents. Even if your old windows never had them.
But the answer isn’t “always”. There are genuine exceptions, such as homes with mechanical ventilation systems, rooms with existing compliant wall vents, and some listed or conservation area properties.

What is Approved Document F Volume 1: Dwellings (Part F)?
The full name of Part F is “Approved Document F Volume 1: Dwellings. It’s the section of the Building Regulations that covers ventilation. For homes, the rules are set out in Approved Document F Volume 1: Dwellings, with the current edition taking effect on 15 June 2022 in England. Its purpose is to make sure homes have enough fresh air to protect indoor air quality and prevent condensation, damp and mould.
For replacement windows, the key principle is simple: the work must not leave your home’s ventilation worse than it was before. Because new windows are more airtight than the ones they replace, trickle vents are usually how that requirement is met.
What Are Trickle Vents?

How Trickle Vents Work
Trickle vents are typically constructed with three main parts: an adjustable vent on the inside, an open slot through the frame, and a weather hood to keep out pests and rain. While they can be manually closed, they are designed to remain open to ensure a constant flow of fresh air into the building, without causing drafts or security issues when windows or doors are left open for ventilation.
Why Are Trickle Vents Used and Now Required in Most Cases For Upgrades?
Modern homes are designed to be highly airtight and insulated. This means that although they are great at keeping heat inside, the energy efficiency can cause moisture to be trapped inside the building. Cooking, showering, breathing and sleeping are all large causes of moisture to be generated and dispersed into the building. With no way of escaping, this moisture can cause mould build-up in enclosed areas, which doesn’t look great and can be a health hazard (particularly with black mould). They are used for two main reasons:
- Improving Air Quality – Trickle vents ensure that stale air is removed from the building as well as pollutants and allergens.
- Reducing Condensation & Mould – Trickle vents provide continuous airflow, which allows condensation to escape rather than pooling in different areas of the building. The condensation builds up on cold surfaces, which then causes black mould to form.
