Are Bifold Doors Secure?

In short, yes! Our bifold doors assure security with their advanced locking mechanisms with 6 point locking systems. When you choose a bifold door from Seal-Lite, your comfort and security come first above all else.

If you’ve been looking into having beautiful bifold doors installed, you may have a few questions about the security they offer. We’ve put together this bifold door lock and security guide to help reassure our customers and allow you to make the right choice for your home.

Bifold doors secured by multi-point locking mechanisms

Our Smarts Visofold 1000 bifold door range is a dramatically beautiful solution to efficiently invite the outside into your home, whilst creating a secure and relaxed space that slides and folds away with ease. Whilst most bifold doors have 3 – 5 lock points, the Smarts Visofold 1000 has an integrated 6 point locking system that has been fully tested to the highest standards.

A multi-point locking system bolts the lead door into the frame and locks at multiple points at the turn of a key, giving high levels of security. The lead door opens and locks completely independently from the rest of the system, so you can open it without opening up the entire bifold concertina.

How do you operate a multi-point locking system?

Multi-point locking systems are really easy to operate. First, you lift the handle to engage the locking points, then you turn the key (or thumb turn) to move the security hooks of the locking system into place.

As well as on our bifold doors, we recommend multi-point locking mechanisms for any door leading from outside to inside your home. Single point locks leave the top and bottom of doors vulnerable, making it a lot easier for intruders to break and enter. With optional lock upgrades available for the extra security conscious, Seal-Lite provides home-owners across the South West with complete peace of mind that their home is in safe hands, whatever life throws at them.

Strong aluminium frames enhance bifold door security

Aluminium is incredibly strong and durable, making it ideal for framing bifold doors. Combining aluminium with sophisticated locking systems, our bifold doors are an undoubtedly secure choice for homeowners today.

With a robust yet sleek aluminium profile, you can be sure the Visofold bifolding door will deliver a reliable performance as well as stunning aesthetics. To protect your home against unwanted visitors, the high-security multi-point locking mechanisms are fitted, along with internally beaded units for added assurance.

‘Beading’ refers to a strip of plastic or aluminium that is applied to the edge of a window or door pane to hold it in place within the frame. If the glazing bead is fitted internally, this simply means that it is located behind the glass, and so cannot be reached from outside, giving you added protection from intruders.

Optional security upgrades for your bifold doors (PAS 24:2012)

PAS 24 (Publicly Available Specification) was created by BSI (British Standards Institution) and is a minimum standard which means doors, and now windows, are tested to the standards specifications with a fail or pass as there are no higher or lower grades of security.

PAS 24:2012 assesses the enhanced security performance requirements of external doors. Intended to resist the levels and methods of attack experienced in the UK, this optional upgrade consists of the following:

  • Upgraded security handle
  • Retained rollers and guides to stop the doors from being forced from their frame
  • Anti-lift blocks. These discrete blocks stop the doors from being lifted up and removed.
  • Nylon-coated stainless steel shootbolts. Shootbolts work by a small pin extending into a recess in the floor which holds the door in place reliably. These shootbolts are fitted to the floating mullions of the bifold door. The floating mullions refer to the vertical elements that form a division between door panels and slide to the side when the door is opened.

Other benefits of aluminium bifold doors:

  • Being inherently strong allows for slim sightlines that can hold large panes of glass. This is ideal for bifold doors as it creates a nearly uninterrupted view of your outside space.
  • Aluminium is naturally low maintenance. A simple wipe-over with a damp cloth once in a while is all you’ll need to keep your bifolds looking as good as the day they were fitted.
  • Available in an attractive wide variety of colours to suit your individual style such as “Antique Grey” and “Ocean Blue”.
  • Scratch and corrosion-resistant finish
